Best Baby Sunscreens in 2024 to Safeguard Your Little One’s Skin

Do you know that sun protection isn’t just important for adults? It’s important for our little ones too! However, the guidelines for the type of sunscreen babies should use are quite different from those of adults.

In this article, we take a deeper look into the factors you should consider when choosing a baby sunscreen and evaluate some of the popular products on the market to help you find the best baby sunscreens. We’ll also provide answers to some frequently asked questions at the end so be sure to keep reading!

1

Why Should You Trust Me?

Who Am I?

Hi! I’m Serene, a mother of one 3-year-old daughter (as of Feb 2024) and I’ve always been concerned about sun exposure. I’ve done quite a bit of research about baby sunscreens but I’m no expert, so I wanted to speak to an actual expert for their opinion and advice!

For this article, I spoke to Dr Lee Hwee Chyen, MOH-accredited dermatologist and medical director at Epi Dermatology & Laser Specialist Clinic, to understand what mommies should look out for when choosing a baby sunscreen. I also surveyed 9 mommies to find out what their concerns are and what sunscreen they have used for their little ones.

Considerations When Choosing a Baby Sunscreen

How to Choose a Baby Sunscreen
How we score

In the survey conducted with our mommies, they shared the key considerations they had when choosing a baby sunscreen. Based on their responses, we decided to evaluate some popular sunscreens using a 1 – 3 rating system based on the following criteria:

  1. Ingredients – Does it contain chemical UV filters or fragrances?
  2. Application methods – Is the application method safe for babies and easy for parents?
  3. SPF – Does it provide sufficient protection from UV rays?
  4. Cost – Is the sunscreen expensive?

We assigned each product a total score out of 12, with 12 indicating the highest score and 3 representing the lowest. Below is the table providing a detailed breakdown for each ranking:

Ingredients

Tip!

It’s important to thoroughly read product labels so you can determine if harsh chemicals are included in the sunscreen, says Dr Lee. When in doubt, consult with your dermatologist for advice.

The type of ingredients used in sunscreens was selected by 8 mommies as one of the key factors they took into consideration.

There are 2 types of sunscreens – mineral and chemical sunscreens. The main differences between the two are their ingredients and the way they work.

  • Mineral: This type of sunscreen typically contains zinc oxide and/or titanium dioxide. The sunscreen will sit on the surface of your skin and prevent the penetration of UV rays, leaving a white cast.
  • Chemical: This sunscreen contains chemicals such as oxybenzone, avobenzone and octisalate. The sunscreen will allow the UV rays to penetrate your skin, but the chemicals will convert the rays into heat upon contact before releasing the heat from your skin.

According to Dr Lee, mineral sunscreens are the preferred option for babies. They generally don’t contain harsh chemicals and parabens that can irritate the delicate skin of babies and cause contact dermatitis. She recommends avoiding chemical sunscreens in general as they tend to contain chemical UV filters such as:

  • Oxybenzone
  • Octinoxate
  • Homosalate
  • Octocrylene
  • Avobenzone
  • Octisalate

Additionally, for baby sunscreens, fragrance-free products are the preferred choice as fragrance can potentially irritate babies’ skin or cause allergic reactions.

Note!

Phenoxyethanol is a highly debated stabilizing ingredient in sunscreens and cosmetics. The risk of cancer or allergies is very low, though some parents may prefer avoiding this ingredient completely.

For this article, this ingredient didn’t count towards the score, but we have highlighted it in the ingredients for each product in case you’d like to take note of it!

Application Methods

Baby sunscreens can come in many different formulations such as lotions, sticks and sprays. Due to the wide range of options available, this factor was chosen as one of the key considerations by 8 of the mommies we surveyed.

According to Dr Lee, lotions, creams or stick sunscreens are recommended as they can be easily applied, especially on a restless baby.

On the other hand, sprays and wipes sunscreens are generally discouraged. The fine mist from sprays can be easily inhaled by babies, posing a risk to their developing respiratory systems. Additionally, it’s often challenging to ensure adequate and even coverage on a baby’s skin.

Wipes also may not provide consistent and adequate coverage and may contain additional ingredients that could cause skin irritation.

SPF

5 of the mommies we surveyed listed the Sun Protection Factor, more commonly known as SPF, as an important consideration when choosing a baby sunscreen.

SPF refers to the duration of time that a sunscreen can shield your skin from harmful UV rays. The higher the SPF, the longer the protection will last. That said, extremely high SPFs may not necessarily offer significantly greater benefits and can sometimes contain more potentially irritating chemicals, according to Dr Lee.

She advises opting for a baby sunscreen with an SPF of 30 to 50 for effective protection against UV rays, as SPF 30 sunscreens block about 97% of UVB rays. She also notes that it’s crucial to reapply the sunscreen regularly to ensure maximum protection against the sun.

Cost

Price is another important factor for mommies. On average, mommies are willing to pay $20 – $25 for a bottle of sunscreen.
