Introduction to the Babyzen YOYO Stroller

About the Babyzen YOYO

In 2013, BABYZEN launched their most ergonomic and compact stroller – the YOYO. The YOYO is designed to be folded easily, and so compact that it can fit in an airline aircraft.

BABYZEN YOYO² prides itself to be suitable for newborns up to 22kg. There are several models that suit your needs:

  • BABYZEN YOYO² 0+ version comes with the newborn pack, so you can start using the stroller immediately. You can fold the stroller with the newborn pack attached.
  • BABYZEN YOYO also sells a bassinet, to be attached to the stroller. Unlike the newborn pack, you will not be able to fold the stroller with the bassinet on.
  • BABYZEN YOYO² 6+ version is meant for 6-month-old babies up to 22kg.
  • BABYZEN Connect Set is an accessory that you can hook to the back of your stroller, turning it into a double stroller.

Importance & Considerations of Strollers

Importance and Considerations

Mommies mainly considered the following factors in choosing the best baby stroller: weight/bulkiness, price point, ease of folding, the safety aspect and if it was comfortable for their baby.

There are many benefits to owning a stroller. A stroller keeps your baby close to you, and it also prevents parents from overstraining themselves from constant carrying. Most strollers can be folded easily and that makes travelling a lot easier.

How Do I Feel About The Babyzen YOYO²?

Personal Experience

I initially learned about the product through a friend, who likened it to a high-quality stroller like a Mercedes. I have personally used this product for a duration of two years. It was handed down to me, having been previously used for four years. To my surprise, upon receiving the stroller, both the wheels and frame were in excellent, if not perfect, condition. The previous owner jokingly confessed to not taking good care of it, yet it endured international travel and various terrains remarkably well. This treatment left me impressed by its durability.

The only modification I made was sending it to Pramwash (get 5% off Pramwash here!) for a thorough cleaning, which cost me approximately $90 – $100. They did an exceptional job, making it feel like I had a brand new stroller. However, it was only after the cleaning process that I discovered I could have also purchased a new fabric of my preferred color for around the same price. I blame my slothful self for not doing enough research.

Typically, I use the stroller when going to shopping malls or when I anticipate my child will need to nap. Despite the crowded environments, its small and portable design makes it highly convenient to bring along. In fact, the Babyzen stroller is so compact that it can even fit inside certain nursing rooms. Having the stroller nearby while nursing is crucial because it allows me to effortlessly transfer my sleeping child from my arms to the stroller without waking them up.

Moreover, pushing the stroller on public transportation such as the MRT and buses is also hassle-free.

Pros of the Babyzen YOYO²

Features
Top Positive Factors for Babyzen YOYO Stroller
Compact & lightweight

The BABYZEN YOYO² stroller weighs only 6.2kg for the 6+ version, and 6.6kg with the newborn pack. The weight makes it very manageable to carry with one hand. It is also foldable to cabin baggage dimensions, making it travel-friendly.

It’s convenient for me because I can fold it up like a shoulder bag when I go from my home to the car. When I take it out of the car, it’s also simple to open up.

Versatility

With one frame, the Babyzen YOYO² is so versatile your child can use it from birth to when he/she has a sibling.

For a start, you could purchase the BABYZEN YOYO² 6+ and the newborn pack or the bassinet for your newborn to use. When your baby is 6 months old, you can use the BABYZEN YOYO² 6+ as it is. If you really love it and would like your second child to experience the same comfort, you could purchase the YOYO Connect and change it to a double stroller.

With the many ways you can design your Babyzen YOYO, you can customise your stroller to your needs.

Babyzen YOYO² has 9 trendy colours for you to choose from. A mommy mentioned that she loved it for its muted colours.

Motherhood is tough enough. It is important to me to look at something aesthetically pleasing if I have to spend a good amount of time with it. Did I also mention how I love that you can easily change the colors of the fabric for a small cost of S$100?! It feels like you are changing to a brand new stroller!

Smooth and easy to maneuver

The stroller is incredibly easy to turn, even at sharp angles. I didn’t realize how much I took this for granted until I tried pushing a different brand and struggled to maneuver it. With the YOYO² stroller, I can effortlessly turn it with just one hand, whereas the other stroller requires both hands.

Cons of the Babyzen YOYO²

Flaws
Negative factors of Babyzen YOYO Stroller
Price

Mommies were mainly concerned about the price of the Babyzen YOYO² (USD 449). Moreover, most of their accessories had to be added on to the original pack – e.g. handlebar, and leg rest.

ItemPrice (USD)
BABYZEN YOYO² 6+449
BABYZEN YOYO Connect Frame379
BABYZEN YOYO Bassinet250
BABYZEN YOYO Newborn Pack180
BABYZEN YOYO Handlebar50
BABYZEN YOYO Leg Rest40

Assuming you are intending to use the Babyzen YOYO² from the birth of your child, you would need to spend about USD 759. This includes:

  • Newborn pack
  • BABYZEN YOYO² 6+
  • Leg rest
  • Handle bar

This leads to my next point of having to buy many accessories.

Many accessories to buy

Unlike other strollers, the Babyzen YOYO² doesn’t include some of the basic accessories – leg rest and handlebar. On top of that, you need to buy a separate newborn pack or bassinet to pair with the Babyzen YOYO² frame, so that you can use this stroller right from the start.

I once heard from a friend that if you have to make another purchase for the footrest, the handle bar, the hooks, then excuse me, is that really a stroller?! The footrest has to be purchased and this can add up to be quite costly on top of an already costly stroller.

For countries that experience the 4 seasons, people may choose to buy the Babyzen YOYO² footmuff to keep the child warm.

Small storage space
Low storage space on Babyzen YOYO Stroller

The Babyzen YOYO²’s storage basket supports only up to 5kg. Several mommies mentioned that it was too small for them. Hence, to increase the storage space, you can consider purchasing their storage bag, or add hooks (like I did!).

I’ve noticed that other moms often put their shopping bags and diaper bags under their strollers. With the Babyzen stroller, I can only fit my Ergobaby carrier, and the storage space is already full. Since I don’t drive, I value the portability of a stroller more than storage. However, the ironic part is that without a car, I have to carry all my bags with me when I’m out, which can be quite inconvenient.

Inability to recline fully
Babyzen stroller is not able to be fully reclined

The Babyzen YOYO² is unable to recline fully and it is less comfortable for a napping baby. This is also the reason why the Babyzen YOYO² stroller is not suitable for newborns as it is unable to recline fully.

As mommies, we all know having a good nap makes or breaks our mood for the entire day. So this is a flaw I really disliked.

Unable to open and close with one hand

As advertised, it looks simple to unfold and fold with one hand.

Video Credit: Babyzen Official Site

However, in reality, it’s only possible with two hands. This can get quite annoying especially if you are holding things or even the baby in one hand.

Inability to attach stroller fan
Cannot install stroller fan on babyzen yoyo

Another thing I dislike is that there is no place to attach a stroller fan. The sleek design doesn’t have a handlebar for me to clip it onto.

As a solution, I bought a fan without a clip attachment and tried hooking it on top using tension. Unfortunately, it doesn’t work well, and the airflow doesn’t reach my child. Stroller fans are really underrated because they can make or break a good nap!
