Who Am I?

Why Should You Trust Me

Hello! I’m Serene, a mother of a 3-year-old daughter. She has been using the Lollababy Laminar Toddler Pillow for some time now and seems to love it. Back when I was shopping for a pillow, I was overwhelmed by the options available and thought it would have been helpful to have some recommendations from other mommies – so here I am with this article!

To understand more about toddler pillows and how to choose them, I spoke to Zoe Chu, founder of Sleep Supernanny. I also spoke to one of our mommies and took a look at various review sites and online forums to check out mommies’ recommendations on good toddler pillows. This article is the compilation of my research and I hope it can help you in your search for the best pillow for your little one.

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), pillows shouldn’t be used by children under 2 years old due to the risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). While most children are ready for a pillow by 2 years old, Zoe recommends observing your child’s sleeping habits and physical development to decide whether a pillow should be introduced.

Some mommies may even wait until their toddlers turn 3 years old, so it completely depends on you and your little one!

Considerations When Choosing Toddler Pillows

How to Choose Toddler Pillows

According to Zoe, choosing the right pillow for your toddler is all about balancing comfort with safety. It’s important to consider the specific needs of your child, including any allergies or sensitivities, and consult with a pediatrician if you have any concerns or questions.

Aside from price, these are some factors that mommies should look out for when shopping for a toddler pillow.

Size

Most toddler pillows are sized 13” x 18”, though some pillows may be slighter wider or narrower than others. Just be sure to check that the pillow is appropriately sized for your toddler’s head!

Firmness

Zoe recommends looking for pillows that are firm enough to provide support, yet soft enough for comfort. They should be flat and align the neck and spine correctly.

Stuffing Material

Natural fillings like down or feather are a popular choice among mommies. They’re soft yet supportive and can be easily cleaned. If your toddler has allergies, Zoe suggests trying pillows with hypoallergenic synthetic fibers.

Pellet-like materials such as buckwheat should be avoided to prevent choking hazards in case the pillow casing tears. Zoe also discourages using memory foam pillows as they can contour too closely to your toddler’s face, creating the risk of suffocation and overheating.

Outer Shell Material

The ideal material for the pillow’s outer shell is organic cotton, according to Zoe. Organic cotton is soft and breathable, gentle on the skin and hypoallergenic. Since it provides good air circulation, it can help keep your toddler cool and comfortable throughout the sweltering summer nights.

Other considerations for the outer shell may include the material’s resistance to mold and mildew.

Ease of washing

Choosing a machine-washable pillow will save you a lot of time and effort since you can simply throw it into the washing machine while you get busy with other chores.
