Introduction to the SNOO Smart Sleeper

About SNOO

Happiest Baby, the brand behind the SNOO Smart Sleeper, is founded by Dr. Harvey Karp and Nina Montée Karp. Dr. Karp is a celebrity pediatrician and the author of the renowned book, The Happiest Baby on the Block.

This technology-enabled bassinet was created by Dr. Karp, Yves Béhar, a renowned designer who has worked on projects with Herman Miller, Samsung and Sodastream, and Dr. Deb Roy, Professor at MIT Media Lab.

Designed to be the extra pair of hands that help parents put their little ones to sleep, the SNOO does a wide range of actions from soothing to rocking to playing calming music. It also allows parents to swaddle their babies without the dangers associated with rolling over. The result – longer sleep time for both parents and babies!

Difference between the SNOO Smart Sleeper and Regular Bassinets

SNOO vs Regular Bassinets

The SNOO Smart Sleeper has become the preferred choice among many parents due to the advantages it offers over regular bassinets.

Safe for Babies to Sleep in

One of parents’ biggest concerns is the danger of their babies rolling over and suffocating themselves. SNOO’s solution to this is a special sleep sack/swaddle that keeps sleeping babies held in place, on their backs, reducing the risk of SIDS and SUID.

Its ability to keep sleeping babies safely on their backs has made it the first and only (at the time of writing) medical device to receive De Novo authorization from the FDA.

Automatic Response to Fussing

A wonderful feature of the SNOO Smart Sleeper is its ability to automatically respond to babies’ fussing. While parents would typically need to put a hold on their current activities to attend to their crying baby, with the SNOO, parents can benefit from a convenient helping hand.

When the SNOO detects any crying or fussing, it’ll combine white noise with a rocking motion to soothe your little one, even when you’re asleep.

Lengthens Sleep Time

A study of more than 10,000 babies, conducted by Happiest Baby, found that the rocking motion of the SNOO Smart Sleeper throughout the night helped babies sleep for 1 hour more every night. Many 2-month-old babies were also found to have slept for 7 straight hours.

How Has It Been Using the SNOO Smart Sleeper?

Personal Experience

I first heard about the SNOO Smart Sleeper from my husband, who was researching newborn sleep. I was initially very hesitant about getting the bassinet because of the price. And because all babies are different, there was no guarantee that it would help my baby sleep. However, my husband and I both agreed that even if it didn’t work, we could resell it and lose a few hundred dollars, which was worth it if our baby could sleep an extra few hours.

We first got the bassinet when Eli, our little one, was 2 weeks old. Our confinement nanny was still helping us with our newborn, and there were many nights our baby needed to be carried to sleep. My husband and I knew the importance of sleep for a baby’s development and decided to just give the bassinet a shot, so we bought a second-hand one.

The only thought that came to my mind after trying it was, “WE SHOULD HAVE GOTTEN THIS FROM DAY ONE”. Eli slept amazingly with the cot – the longest sleep he got was 8 hours. AMAZING. However, I was concerned as well and we started the weaning mode about 2.5 months in, and at 3 months, got him off the SNOO. It was good; he didn’t sleep as well, but it was manageable.

But at the 3.5-month mark, when Eli was going through his sleep regression, we put him back on the SNOO. He slept well again. At around 4.5 months, he started showing signs of frustration (using his leg and banging the cot when he was swaddled up), so we took him off the SNOO completely.

Overall, the SNOO has been amazing. And yes, I would definitely use this product for my next child. Even though we eventually had to sleep train Eli after he outgrew the SNOO, it did promote very good sleep during the months he was on it.

As the SNOO is designed to be used by babies until they’re 6 months old, I was very concerned about weaning my baby off. The app does provide a guide on how to wean, but every baby is different so it can be difficult to wean your baby off.

Pros of the SNOO Smart Sleeper

Calms and Soothes Baby

The SNOO is a smart bassinet with constant calming womb-like motion and sound, which automatically responds to a baby fussing. It not only helped my baby sleep better, but it was also able to calm him and soothe him when he was crying.

Something interesting that I noticed is the bassinet’s ability to differentiate a baby’s cries from room noise, which I thought was pretty cool!

Prevents Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS)

The SNOO sleep sack is unlike typical sleep sacks or swaddles – it comes with wings attached to safety clips. This kept my baby secure on his back and prevented him from dangerous rolling, even with the rocking motion. In fact, the all-night motion feature cannot be turned on if the safety clips aren’t in place, reducing the risk of SIDS.

Easy to Assemble and Take Apart

I was shuttling back and forth between my mom’s and my place, so I often needed to take apart and reassemble the bassinet. Disassembling and reassembling it was easy, and while the SNOO was heavy, it was very easy to transport.

Easy to Control

While the SNOO is a smart bassinet and automatically increases the white noise and rocking motion when needed, there’s also the option to increase the noise and motion on my own. I could do this through the mobile app or by pressing the button on the side of the bassinet.

The app was pretty straightforward to use, and we could also track our baby’s sleep cycle on it – this information was very helpful!

Aesthetically Pleasing Design

Aesthetically, the SNOO is a very pretty cot. Its clean, minimalist design and color mean it goes well with any room design or color.

Cons of the SNOO Smart Sleeper

Delicate Netting

SNOO Smart Sleeper - Delicate Netting

While the SNOO is very pretty, the netting is rather delicate. While weaning my baby off the SNOO, we took his hands out of the swaddle and he would place his little fingers into the holes of the netting, which tore pretty easily.

Quite Expensive

A brand-new SNOO comes at a premium price of $1,695. We bought ours second-hand at $894 and eventually sold it on the same platform afterwards for $512. So our total outlay of the SNOO was about $382.

The premium price can make you have second thoughts; I was initially very hesitant about getting one because of its price. But if you ask me now if it’s worth it, I would tell you, yes every cent.

Considerations When Buying a Baby Bassinet

    Importance & Considerations

If you’re still deciding between the SNOO and another bassinet, here are some considerations you might want to take into account when making your decision.

    Mattress Firmness and Support

Choosing the right mattress for your little one is crucial in reducing the risk of suffocation or entrapment. It’s recommended to opt for a firm mattress without heavy padding so that your baby’s face won’t sink into the mattress.

    Rocking Motion

A bassinet with a rocking motion sounds like a wonderful idea – it can help you soothe your baby and even put them to sleep. However, it can pose a safety hazard if there aren’t any precautions in place.

The rocking motion, coupled with your baby’s movement, can cause them to roll onto their side or front. This can place them at risk of suffocation. Thus, if you’re looking for bassinets with rocking motion, it’s critical to check if there are safety features (like SNOO’s sleep sack with wings) or precautions in place to prevent such incidents.

Choosing a bassinet that matches the aesthetic of your room is important. However, it’s even more important to choose one that’s designed with safety in mind. Side slats that are too wide apart, decorative posts that can catch on your little one’s clothing and decorative cutouts can all be potential safety hazards that you might want to avoid.

If you’ll constantly be switching between houses (like your in-laws and your house), you might want to get a bassinet that’s easy to transport, or at least easy to disassemble and assemble. Alternatively, if you’ll be busy around the house all day and want to keep your little one at your side, getting a bassinet with wheels (and wheel locks) could be helpful.
